Coffee – It’s Everywhere!

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, “This liquid is taking over humanity!” Seinfeld, who most notably wrote and starred in one of the most famous sit-coms ever – “Seinfeld”- jokes about coffee’s ubiquitous nature, but after “Seinfeld” went off the air in the late 1990s the comedian went on to produce another famous series which revolved around coffee: “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” In this documentary style show he talks shop with fellow comedians while riding in some of his priceless classic cars on the way to get a cup of coffee. Seinfeld understands the power of coffee  – it brings people together and acts as a conduit forming strong emotional connections across many different cultures. However, not everyone can hop into a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder and grab coffee on the go. That’s why we’re grateful for all the amazing ways to brew coffee at home! This guide will give an introduction to the perfect cup of coffee at home.

Common Brewing Options

Pour-over brewing has become one of the more popular ways to brew because it’s easier to control how much water goes through the grids. You can customize the strength of your brew and the taste will be a lot less bitter. Popular pour-over devices are Chemex and HAIRO.

Another great option is the drip brewer. Drip brewers can make a lot more coffee in a shorter amount of time, but they don’t allow for as much control over the brewing process. Automatic drip brewers are a great option for coffee lovers who want to make a lot of coffee fast. But, these machines don’t provide the level of control that a pour-over brewer would. For example, you can’t adjust the water temperature or the length of time that it drips through the grounds. However, drip brewers have come a long way. One of the best pots of coffee around is produced by the Moccamaster.

Another Option

The french press is a popular brewing method that is used by many coffee enthusiasts.

The french press uses coarse ground coffee, which is then steeped in hot water for a few minutes. After the steep time has passed, a filtered plunger is pressed down leaving the grounds at the bottom of the pot. The resulting brew is rich and flavorful.

The french press has some downsides though. It can leave some sediment in your cup if you don’t wait long enough before plunging, or use coarse ground beans instead of finely ground ones.

Bean Choice

The flavor in coffee beans is based on the type of bean and how it is roasted. The longer the roasting time, the more bitter the taste. This happens because during roasting, water is forced out of the beans and replaced with carbon dioxide. With less water inside to balance out some of those strong flavor compounds, you end up with a crisper, more refreshing taste, but sometimes slightly bitter taste.

The most popular type of coffee bean is the Arabica bean. This type of bean has a mild flavor and it can be found in almost every coffee shop around the world. However, with a steep rise in homebrewing, people have become more interested in finding unique, high quality beans sourced from all over the world. This is known as the third wave coffee movement.
